This month will see BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts alumna Mirjana Smith exhibit alongside the highly acclaimed artist Sir Peter Blake at the Porthminster Gallery in St Ives. Peter Blake made a name for himself in the 1960s with collages juxtaposing images from popular culture, such as advertising slogans, comic strips and poster images of Marilyn and Elvis alongside bold geometric patterns. His most iconic work includes The Beatles’ 1967 album cover for Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band.
Mirjana emerged into the art and craft world after graduating from Falmouth in 2011 where she had focused on assemblage art from found objects. The use of second hand and discarded objects is paramount in Mirjana’s work. She constructs her pieces from bought, found and discarded teapots, kettles and other kitchenalia, combining these with unusual joining methods to create quirky, original and witty characterised assemblages.
Sir Peter, who is 81, overcame ill health to make it down to the private view of his colourful limited edition silkscreen prints, and during his visit bought a piece by his fellow exhibitor Mirjana. “He is starting to collect her work, which is wonderful because she’s a young Cornish artist who’s just starting out,” said Gallery Manager Claire Pearce.
